I'm looking for something nice and fun for a DD. Are the xk8's even remotely close to reliable?

It's not an XKS and was designed and built under Ford. It's a step up from traditional Jag reliability, but probably not as reliable as the typical car from the era.

Wasn't there someone on oppo who found out their XK8 had sand in the engine?

Yeah, they thought it was sabotage from an ex-housemate. Had way too many miles on it for sand to be present from new and the engine still be running.

I don't see why it shouldn't be just as reliable as other luxury GTs from the era (hell, probably a damn-sight better than contemporary Mercs).
I wouldn't expect nothing to go wrong, and I wouldn't expect it to be Ford/Chevy cheap when it does, but I see tons of these on the road here in the UK so they can't be that bad :)

My neighbor has had one for 12 years and the only thing that's gone wrong is the radiator hose popped off.

i'm looking at them also (a couple posts down). I'm sure it's the typical "bad shape cheap, good shape over priced" situation in your area. I may not too much about those late 90's early 200's XK's, but I do know a lot about DB7's...... things are going to get pricey.

I was looking at one for quite a while a few years back and ended up borrowing one from a friend's garage last year for almost a month. The only thing he mentioned and what came up in my research was that maintenance costs are high but if you do regular maintenance, you won't have anything go wrong.

Just take the plunge and write about your trials and tribulations on oppo. Regular maintenance is a reasonable price to pay for daily driving sexiness.

Ford era jaaags aren't horrendous on reliability. Parts aren't unobtanium and they're cheaper than a bmw or mb in my view.

Does it even matter? When it breaks down you can still have something beautiful to look at

Imagine yourself encountering a specific hooker , there is a 90% chance of leaving with an STD, and a 10% chance of leaving with more than one. Now replace the word " Hooker " with the word " Jaguar ." and replace "Leaving with an STD " with breaking .
There's your answer.
